Summer Skin Care And Winter Skin Care

Summer Skin Care And Winter Skin Care

f you have only one skin care routine throughout the year, you are doing it wrong. Summer and winter provide vastly different conditions for your skin and you need to be cognizant of this change. Whether you live in the south or the north, there are temperature, UV ray and wind variations between the seasons. Ensuring your skin is taken care of through all the variations will help keep your skin looking youthful and beautiful for many years.

Summer of Love

Summer is often the time that we go through life with a smile on our face and no cares. Yet, it can be disastrous for many that end up with skin cancer,  aging of the skin and wrinkles, dryness or sun spots. Sunning yourself without a proper skin care routine can lead to major health issues which can also affect the glow and beauty of your skin.

Summer Weather

The summer in the US provides up to 80% of the UV exposure from the sun. Not only is the sun closer to the equator during this season, but many people spend a lot more time outdoors during this time. If you are an active summer person that likes to spend days at the beach, outdoor cycling, hiking or any other activity that puts you in the sun for hours at a time, you need to have a consistent skin care routine.

It is also said that the sun is responsible for up to 80% of skins aging and recent studies prove that UV rays can continue to harm your skin for hours after exposure, means you need to be vigilant in your routine.

Before

Well before going outside, your first routine options should be to clean your skin.  Next is to use a skin moisturizer with anti-oxidant fighting properties or an all natural serum to help with dryness. The sun can dry out the skin very quickly and the skin’s natural oxidant fighters are removed during this process. By hydrating your skin with a lotion that includes anti-oxidants you provide the building blocks to fight damaging UV rays. 30 minutes before going outside make sure to apply at least SPF 30 to your skin liberally in order to create a sun shield against UV rays.

During

If you notice your skin becoming dry or tight, while you are outside, feel free to reapply your moisturizing lotion in the exposed parts of your skin. For sunscreen you should reapply at least every 2 hours or directly after a workout or coming out of a pool. Keeping a continuous shield is very important while in direct sunlight. Wear SPF sunglasses, wide-brimmed hats and covering up can all help as well.

After

When you come in for the day, be sure to wash away the sun block you have applied and liberally reapply your antioxidant moisturizer or serum. In this way, you can ensure the antioxidants are reabsorbed into your skin to fight sun damage even after you are out of the sun.

Winter of Discontent

Too many people regress during the winter months in their skin care simply because they are not as worried about UV rays, sun damage or being in the elements as much. However, the season can be particularly damaging because of this lack of application.

Winter Elements

Although you may not be out in the sun as much in the winter, UV rays can still be damaging in the winter. Combined with cold weather and biting winds, your skin can become affected more quickly because of the cold and dryness of the season. Even if you live in the south, your skin becomes acclimatized to the temperature variations and a 10-20F change can still be quite damaging to your skin. Winter dryness can be especially hard on certain skin types. Do not wait for winter to arrive, start changing over your routine in the waning days of summer.

Shoulder Seasons

It does not have to be summer to be affected by outdoor weather. Be mindful of the weather in Spring and Fall and do not be caught outside on a beautiful day without proper skin care products. One day in the sun can cause damage that adds up to long term damage.

Skin Care Differences

The dryness of the winter months should be taken seriously as dry skin, itching, flaking and inflamed skin can often be the result of not properly hydrating your skin during the winter. Even if you have naturally oily skin, you may find in the winter that certain regions of your body dry out a lot faster than others. These regions typically include your extremities such as hands, feet, ears, nose and cheeks.

Skin Care Additions

One of the most important additions to your daily skin care routine should be the addition of a heavy night time cream. While you may not want to wear these during the day, putting on a heavy moisturizer at night is the perfect way to keep your skin hydrated during this dry season.

Adding in a moisturizing lip balm, lotion, cleanser and mask can all have a dramatic effect in keeping your skin glowing and healthy. Also ensure that you use a gentler cleanser in the winter as your skin is often more sensitive, avoiding  alcohol based cleansers, using more milk or foaming cleansers.
